Bournemouth Signs U.S. Youth International Matai Akinmboni

The 18-year-old defender joins the Premier League club from D.C. United in a deal worth up to $2.5 million.

Matai Akinmboni, an 18-year-old center back from Maryland, has transferred from D.C. United to AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The transfer fee includes an initial $1.25 million with potential add-ons bringing the total to $2.5 million, along with a percentage of future transfer fees for D.C. United.
Akinmboni made his MLS debut at 15, becoming one of the youngest players in league history, and has represented the U.S. at various youth levels, including the U-20 national team.
He will initially join Bournemouth’s U21 squad and is expected to integrate into the club’s system, with potential future loan opportunities in Europe.
D.C. United praised Akinmboni’s development through their academy and highlighted the move as a milestone for the club’s player development program.
