Boulder Valley Board Approves Closing Four Elementary Schools

Overview

• The Boulder Valley School District board voted 5–2 this week to adopt a restructuring plan that closes Douglass, Mesa, Flatirons and Birch elementaries and changes grade assignments or campuses at 16 schools in total.
• Under the plan Community Montessori will move into the High Peaks site, High Peaks will relocate to the Douglass building, Mesa will merge with Bear Creek, and Flatirons students will be split between Whittier and Foothills.
• District officials said the decision responds to a long decline in enrollment and underused buildings and that the changes take effect for the 2027–28 school year.
• BVSD has set aside transition funding, a liaison for families and staff, moving support, guaranteed priority enrollment for affected students, and it says students with IEPs will continue to receive services while dual-language, preschool and bus plans are finalized.
• Parents and students protested the plan at district headquarters and delivered large petitions opposing closures while board members warned the moves address the next five years as officials monitor future enrollment and budget risks.
