Boston Red Sox Hire Former Pitcher Craig Breslow as Head of Baseball Operations

Breslow to replace Chaim Bloom, aiming for a successful tenure in the lines of fellow Yale graduate Theo Epstein; amid concerns of his relative lack of experience, the Red Sox see Breslow as step forward in pitching development and analytics.

  • Former pitcher Craig Breslow has been appointed as the head of baseball operations for the Boston Red Sox, succeeding Chaim Bloom who was dismissed in September after the team finished in last place in three of the four seasons under his management.
  • Breslow, who formerly played for the Red Sox from 2006 and again from 2012-15, has been working in the Cubs front office since 2019, most recently as an assistant general manager.
  • As the second Yale graduate to lead the Red Sox baseball operations department following Bloom, the organization is optimistic that Breslow can replicate the successes of fellow Yale graduate, Theo Epstein, who led the franchise to end its 86-year World Series drought, winning it in 2004 and 2007.
  • Despite concerns over Breslow's lack of experience leading baseball operations, the Red Sox value his familiarity with the Boston market, analytical acumen, pitching background, and potential to advance pitching development, an area where the organization has struggled in recent years.
  • However, fears persist that Breslow might overly prioritize analytics in player evaluation and roster construction, an approach that led to controversial trade decisions under Bloom's tenure, including the trading of 2018 AL MVP Mookie Betts.
