Boston Proposes Closing Three Schools and Reconfiguring Three More for 2027–28

The plan goes to the School Committee for virtual consideration on Wednesday.

Overview

  • Lee Academy Pilot School, Another Course to College, and Community Academy of Science and Health are proposed for closure starting in the 2027–28 school year.
  • The Henderson K–12 Inclusion School would shift to a PreK–8 model, Tobin Elementary would drop grades 7–8, and the William E. Russell School would add grade 6.
  • District officials say roughly 850 students attend the schools slated to close and about 1,500 are enrolled at the schools marked for reconfiguration.
  • BPS projects one-time savings of $20 million to reinvest in schools, while leaders frame the moves as improving student experience and expanding special education and multilingual supports.
  • Enrollment has fallen to about 46,800 students, and the long-term facilities plan targets roughly 95 schools by 2030, with this round expected to bring the total to about 100 if approved.
