Boston Police Cruiser Burned in South End Vehicle Takeover as 2 From R.I. Are Arrested

Police urge tips following overnight attacks tied to vehicle takeovers.

Overview

  • Officers encountered more than 100 people at Massachusetts Avenue and Tremont Street around 2:12 a.m., with vehicles blocking the intersection and objects including fireworks, cones and poles thrown at marked cruisers.
  • One cruiser filled with smoke after repeated fireworks strikes and was destroyed by fire before Boston Fire Department crews extinguished the blaze and the vehicle was towed.
  • Police arrested Julian Bowers, 18, of Cumberland, R.I., and William Cantwell, 19, of Warwick, R.I., on charges that include malicious destruction of property over $1,200, disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.
  • Cantwell also faces a possession of Class D marijuana charge after police said they found marijuana edibles; both suspects are expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court as Crime Scene Response and Fire Investigation units document evidence.
  • About 45 minutes earlier in Randolph, a crowd of more than 100 masked individuals swarmed cruisers and set off fireworks during a separate vehicle takeover, which remains under investigation with no arrests announced.
