Boston Bruins Honor Maine Mass Shooting Victims, Pledge $100,000 in Aid
Bruins goaltender and Maine alum Jeremy Swayman hung up a ‘Lewiston Strong’ jersey, and the team wore Maine stickers during a game to honor the 18 people killed in the tragic shooting; an aid fund has been set up by the Boston Bruins Foundation to support the affected families.
- The Boston Bruins paid tribute to the victims of the Maine mass shooting with a 'Lewiston Strong' jersey displayed during their game against the Anaheim Ducks. The jersey was hung up by goalie Jeremy Swayman, a University of Maine alum, and featured the number 207, representing Maine's area code. The team also wore Maine stickers on their helmets.
- The Boston Bruins Foundation announced it will be donating at least $100,000 to those affected by the shooting and will also be auctioning off player-signed hockey sticks to benefit the victims' families.
- Following the shootings, which killed 18 people and injured others, the Boston Bruins Foundation has set up a fund to support the affected families. Donations can also be made directly at TheMaineFund.org, and the Bruins' 50/50 Raffle during their game against the Ducks also went towards aiding the affected families.
- Robert Card, 40, has been identified as the possible suspect in the shootings. Authorities warned residents and businesses in Lisbon, where Card's vehicle was found, to remain on guard and shelter in place.
- Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery, also a University of Maine alum, offered his condolences to the victims of the shootings. Other New England-based sports teams, including the Patriots, Red Sox, and Celtics, also issued statements about the tragedy.
