Boston Archdiocese Orders Dedham Parish to Remove ‘ICE Was Here’ Nativity Display

Father Stephen Josoma says a written order will come first, then a consultation with parish leaders.

Overview

  • In statements Friday, the Archdiocese of Boston called the Dedham display “divisive political messaging” and said the manger should be restored to its sacred purpose.
  • St. Susanna’s installation replaces the Holy Family with a sign reading “ICE was here,” a concept the Boston Globe attributed to the parishioners’ council and intended as a protest over immigration enforcement.
  • Josoma told reporters he has spoken with Bishop Robert P. Reed and will wait for an official request, with the parish council set to discuss the display this weekend.
  • Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons labeled the tableau “sad political rhetoric,” and a DHS spokeswoman called it offensive and asserted that “ICE does not separate families.”
  • An outside Catholic commentator said noncompliance could risk disciplinary action, while the parish posted images online and supporters defended the priest on its Facebook page.
