Boston Activist Monica Cannon-Grant Pleads Guilty to 18 Federal Fraud and Tax Counts

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 29, 2026 under a deal that drops additional charges.

Overview

  • Cannon-Grant pleaded guilty to 10 counts of aiding and abetting wire fraud, three counts of wire fraud conspiracy, one count of aiding and abetting mail fraud, two counts of filing false tax returns, and two counts of failing to file tax returns.
  • Prosecutors agreed to dismiss nine other counts under the plea, including mortgage-related allegations such as making false statements to a lending business.
  • U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley required Cannon-Grant to appear in person for the plea hearing and allowed a sealed defense filing citing sensitive personal and minor-related information.
  • Prosecutors say more than $1 million in donations and nearly $60,000 in pandemic relief intended for Violence in Boston were diverted to personal expenses including travel, dining, salon visits, rent, and a car for a family member.
  • Founded in 2017, Violence in Boston later shut down; Cannon-Grant rose to prominence in 2020, and charges against her co-defendant husband were dropped after his death in 2023.
