Bornholm Power Cut After Swedish Cable Disruption, Cause Disputed

Conflicting statements from local versus national operators leave the cause unclear.

Overview

  • Electricity went out across the Danish island at 10:16 a.m. local time while it was being supplied via the undersea link to Sweden.
  • Local utility Trefor El-Net Øst reported an overload on the interconnector, said the cable is intact, and worked to re-establish the connection.
  • Denmark’s grid operator Energinet said there was no cable fault and indicated Bornholm was ready to receive power from Sweden again.
  • Emergency services started a power plant in Rønne to restore supply, with full restoration expected to take hours.
  • Police said the outage also disrupted water service, and Trefor later told Berlingske the supply could resume around 8 p.m. GMT.
