Border Patrol Rescues Cyclist Who Plunged 50 Feet Into Otay Lakes Canyon

Officials credit a Border Patrol team with lifesaving care after hearing cries from a canyon.

Overview

  • The fall happened Sept. 20 on a trail at Otay Lakes County Park near the Sweetwater/Savage Dam, leaving the cyclist trapped for hours.
  • Agents on patrol heard calls for help, hiked into the canyon, and an on-scene EMT among them stabilized the injured rider.
  • A San Diego Fire-Rescue helicopter hoisted the man out and took him to a hospital, where local reports say he remains in the ICU with a collapsed lung and broken bones.
  • San Diego Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey D. Stalnaker said there was no doubt the agents saved the man's life.
  • Agents returned the next day to recover the bicycle and personal items for his wife, after earlier search efforts were slowed when crews could not find his car.
