Border Patrol Offers $30K Bonuses to New Recruits Amid Migrant Surge

The move comes as the agency grapples with staffing shortages and lawmakers in Washington continue negotiations for additional federal funding.

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is offering up to $30,000 in bonuses to new recruits in an effort to address staffing shortages amid a surge in migrant crossings.
  • New Border Patrol agents are eligible for a $20,000 recruitment incentive, with half paid once their training is complete and the other $10,000 paid after three years of service.
  • Agents who agree to work in remote locations along the border, such as in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, will be eligible for an additional $10,000 bonus.
  • The CBP is also hosting a virtual career expo on January 24 to attract more applicants.
  • The increased recruitment efforts come as lawmakers in Washington, D.C. are still trying to reach a deal which would see more federal funding to tackle the migrant crisis.
