Overview

  • Agents uncovered the incomplete tunnel beneath the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in early April and mapped its full 2,918-foot course linking Tijuana to a planned exit near a San Diego warehouse
  • Investigators found the passage outfitted with electrical wiring, lighting, ventilation systems and a rail track designed for rapid movement of contraband
  • U.S. and Mexican authorities traced the entrance to a two-story home in Tijuana’s Nueva Tijuana neighborhood, where it was concealed under freshly laid tiles
  • Contractors will pour thousands of gallons of concrete into the tunnel to prevent any future use, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said
  • More than 95 smuggling tunnels have been uncovered and decommissioned in the San Diego area since 1993, underscoring ongoing binational efforts against narcotics trafficking
