Bonzi Upsets Medvedev at US Open After On-Court Photographer Halts Match

The USTA revoked the photographer’s credential as Medvedev’s tirade at the chair and a racket-smashing outburst drew sustained boos that he later said would earn him a big fine.

Overview

  • Benjamin Bonzi eliminated 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev in five sets, 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4, to reach the second round.
  • At Bonzi’s match point in the third set, chair umpire Greg Allensworth re-awarded a first serve after a photographer walked onto the court, triggering Medvedev’s protest.
  • Play was halted for roughly six minutes as Medvedev confronted the umpire, waved for louder boos and shouted, “Are you a man? Why are you shaking?”
  • The USTA said security escorted the photographer from Louis Armstrong Stadium and revoked his credentials following the incident.
  • Bonzi, who also beat Medvedev at Wimbledon this season, steadied in the decider after Medvedev forced a fifth and then smashed multiple rackets after the loss.
