Bonhams to Auction 30 Bob Ross Paintings to Bolster Public TV After Funding Cuts

Net proceeds will go to American Public Television to help local stations cover licensing fees after Congress rescinded $1.1 billion for public broadcasting.

Overview

  • The first sale is scheduled for Nov. 11 in Los Angeles with three works—Cliffside (1990), Winter’s Peace (1993) and Home in the Valley (1993).
  • Additional auctions are planned in London, New York, Boston and online, with further dates to be announced by Bonhams.
  • Organizers have pledged all net proceeds to American Public Television and local public TV stations to support programming and licensing costs.
  • Bonhams estimates the 30 paintings will bring a combined $850,000 to $1.4 million, following August sales of two Ross works for $114,800 and $95,750.
  • The initiative follows Congress’ elimination of $1.1 billion for public broadcasting at President Donald Trump’s direction, which has led to budget cuts, layoffs and CPB’s shutdown.
