Bonhams to Auction 30 Bob Ross Paintings for Public TV, First Sale Nov. 11

The sales are designed to help stations pay distributor fees for American Public Television programs after deep federal cuts squeezed local budgets.

Overview

  • The opening auction is set for Nov. 11 in Los Angeles as part of BonhamsCalifornia & Western Art sale, with additional events planned in London, New York, Boston and online.
  • Three works will be offered in the Los Angeles sale: “Cliffside” (1990), “Winter’s Peace” (1993) and “Home in the Valley” (1993).
  • Bonhams says all net proceeds will go to American Public Television and PBS stations to support licensing costs for popular shows.
  • The group of 30 paintings carries a combined estimate of $850,000 to $1.4 million, and many pieces were created live during single episodes of The Joy of Painting.
  • The fundraising effort follows this year’s elimination of about $1.1 billion in public broadcasting support, which has led many local stations to launch emergency drives and cut staff and programming.
