Bonhams Sets Three-Part Auction of Gene Hackman Collection for November–December

The sale presents a portrait of the late actor’s creative life through modern art highlights, personal paintings, film memorabilia.

Overview

  • Bonhams will hold a live auction in New York on November 19, with online sales running November 8–21 and November 25–December 4.
  • Top lots include Milton Avery’s Figure on the Jetty (est. $500,000–$700,000) and Richard Diebenkorn’s Green (est. $300,000–$500,000), alongside a Rodin bronze.
  • Three Golden Globes are on offer, including awards for Unforgiven and The Royal Tenenbaums, plus a Cecil B. DeMille lifetime honor, while his French Connection Globe is not included.
  • The catalog spans Hackman’s own paintings and everyday possessions, with estimates such as $1,000–$1,500 for Still Life with Japanese Vase, $100 for a dartboard, and $600 for a Seiko diver’s watch, plus annotated books, scripts, posters, and a portrait by Everett Raymond Kinstler.
  • Autopsy findings reported earlier this year determined Betsy Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and Hackman died about a week later from heart disease with Alzheimer’s complications.
