Overview

  • KEM Hospital’s dean affirmed in a June 16 affidavit that only rainwater briefly pooled in an open corridor and that critical patient areas, including wards and imaging units, remained fully operational.
  • The Bombay High Court initiated suo motu action after media footage showed May 26 water ingress and instructed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to inspect the hospital and recommend fixes.
  • To prevent future ingress, the hospital has erected a temporary shed over the corridor, upgraded suction pumps and increased drain maintenance ahead of monsoon rains.
  • The court has given BMC and the hospital administration until June 23 to submit a timeline for implementing short-term flood mitigation measures.
  • Alongside KEM’s case, a five-member expert committee has delivered both immediate and long-term recommendations for bolstering infrastructure across Maharashtra’s government medical colleges and hospitals.
