Bombay High Court Presses Mumbai on Air Crisis, Sets Review of Panel’s 36-Site Audit

The bench will examine a court-appointed panel’s findings on pollution hotspots at a December 22 hearing.

Overview

  • The court refused an urgent hearing to developers seeking to intervene, saying it would first assess their compliance with pollution-mitigation norms.
  • An independent committee inspected 36 locations across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai between December 6 and 13, and its report is being circulated before the next hearing.
  • Emphasising solutions over more filings, the bench observed, “We have to find a solution. We can’t live like this.”
  • In a fresh affidavit, the BMC reported collecting 67.86 tonnes of dust and washing 1,518.35 km of roads using about 34.8 lakh litres of water since November 1, with Rs 84,700 collected in 107 garbage-burning cases.
  • The BMC said 1,954 construction projects are active, 1,020 sensors are installed with 397 underway, 246 of 593 bakeries still use wood or coal after notices, and a decision-support dashboard is being developed with CEEW.
