Overview

  • A bench of Justices Girish S. Kulkarni and Arif S. Doctor issued the directive during a PIL hearing by NGO Vanashakti challenging the site’s environmental clearance.
  • The committee will be led by the state chief secretary under Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, with participation from urban development and municipal officials and an environment ministry representative.
  • The panel must submit its detailed relocation blueprint by July 22, when the high court will assess its compliance.
  • The court stressed that locating landfills in thickly inhabited areas infringes basic human rights to a pollution-free environment and flagged Kanjurmarg’s unsuitability.
  • Justices directed authorities to study international waste-management models and draw lessons from the Deonar experience to ensure scientific planning.
