Bomb Threat Email to Chennai ED Office Triggers Evacuation, Found to Be Hoax

Investigators are examining the sender in a case that follows a spate of hoax threats across India.

Overview

  • An email sent to the Tamil Nadu DGP’s official address claimed a device was planted at the Enforcement Directorate’s Southern Regional Office in Shastri Bhawan, Nungambakkam.
  • The building was evacuated as BDDS personnel, a sniffer dog unit, and local police conducted searches and found no explosives.
  • Police arrived around 8:40 am, the anti-sabotage sweep began at 10:30 am, and an hour-long scan concluded with no suspicious items detected.
  • The search was videographed and carried out in the presence of senior ED officials, including the Special Director (Southern Region) and the Additional Director (CEZO–I).
  • Police confirmed the threat was a hoax and opened a probe to trace the email’s origin, with officials noting similar emails reportedly linked to a sender labeled “Terrorizers 111.”
