Boil-Water Advisory Issued in Hoboken After Sinkhole Triggers 12-Inch Main Break

Repairs are expected to continue into the night at Newark and Garden streets.

Overview

  • A sinkhole caused the 12-inch main to rupture after 10 a.m. at Newark and Garden streets, flooding the area, opening a large street hole, and leaving muddy debris.
  • Veolia, Hoboken OEM, the fire department, and police isolated the break within about an hour before beginning repair work projected to finish around 10 to 11 p.m.
  • Veolia advised residents to boil tap water until further notice due to pressure fluctuations in the system during emergency repairs.
  • The city is distributing bottled water starting at 3 p.m. at the Multi-Service Center, Monroe Gardens, and Fox Hill Gardens.
  • Garden Street from Observer Highway to First Street and Newark Street from Garden to Bloomfield are closed to traffic, and towed cars can be retrieved for free at the Jefferson city lot.
