Boeing Takes Responsibility for Missing Bolts Incident on 737 Max 9
The company is implementing quality measures following the NTSB's report on the January 5 panel detachment incident.
- The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a preliminary report stating that four bolts designed to secure a panel on a Boeing 737 Max 9 were missing before the panel detached midflight on January 5.
- Boeing has acknowledged responsibility for the incident and is taking immediate actions to strengthen quality, including ensuring all mid-exit door plugs on 737-9s are installed properly.
- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grounded 171 Boeing 737 Max 9 planes following the incident, but those planes have since been cleared to return to service.
- The FAA is conducting an audit of Boeing's manufacturing processes and has increased oversight, including moving inspectors into facilities.
- The incident has raised concerns about manufacturing quality at Boeing, adding to questions that began with the deadly crashes of two Max 8 jets in 2018 and 2019.
