Boeing Settles With Ontario Man Days Before Chicago Trial Over 2019 Ethiopian 737 Max Crash

The confidential deal arrived days before opening statements in a Chicago wrongful-death trial.

Overview

  • Attorneys for Manant Vaidya said Boeing agreed to a confidential settlement late Tuesday, just before opening statements were set to begin in U.S. District Court in Chicago.
  • Vaidya lost six close relatives in the disaster, including his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, and two teenage nieces.
  • Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, a Boeing 737 Max 8, crashed on March 10, 2019 shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa, killing all 157 people on board, including 18 Canadians.
  • Investigators linked the crash to faulty sensor readings that triggered an automated system which repeatedly pushed the jet’s nose down.
  • Boeing has said it is deeply sorry, has accepted legal responsibility in these proceedings, and this year reached a separate agreement with the U.S. Justice Department that avoids criminal prosecution related to the Max crashes.
