Boeing Breaks Ground on South Carolina 787 Expansion to Boost 2026 Output

The more than $1 billion build targets a 10-per-month Dreamliner rate to help work down a backlog approaching 1,000 jets.

Overview

  • Boeing formally started construction at its North Charleston site, launching a program to raise 787 production to 10 airplanes per month in 2026.
  • The expansion adds a second final assembly building comparable to the existing 1.2 million–square–foot facility, plus production support and office space.
  • Planned upgrades include a parts preparation facility, a vertical fin paint building, additional Flight Line stalls, and additions to the Interiors Responsibility Center.
  • The project carries an investment of more than $1 billion, with Boeing projecting over 1,000 new jobs in the next five years and more than 2,500 construction workers engaged for 6.2 million hours.
  • Construction management is led by a BE&K | HITT joint venture with BRPH as architect of record, as Boeing cites more than 2,250 total 787 orders, over 1,200 deliveries, and a backlog near 1,000 aircraft.
