Overview
- A Boeing 767-300 that had flown from San Juan exceeded the runway after landing on Sunday and crossed the airport perimeter before striking a van and an SUV, with five people in the van confirmed dead and five others injured.
- More than 60 rescue units and about 200 emergency personnel fought fires, contained fuel leaks and closed all runways and taxiways before operations were partially restored later that night.
- Federal investigators from the NTSB and FAA recovered the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder and shipped both to Washington for analysis while stressing that no probable cause has been determined.
- The aircraft was a 32-year-old 21 Air-operated freighter flying for Amazon Prime Air as flight 7598; tracking data show it left the usable runway area at roughly 112 knots and the two crew members survived.
- The crash, which hit airport contractors working outside the perimeter, has renewed scrutiny of cargo operator arrangements and safety oversight and investigators will next analyze the recorders, interview the crew and review maintenance and operational records.
