Overview
- Hillsborough County deputies responded around 2:04 p.m. Sunday to a 911 call from the suspect’s sister reporting an assault at a Brandon home.
- After hearing screams, deputies breached a bedroom and found 27-year-old Mario Camacho choking his 7-year-old brother at knifepoint while wearing a motorcycle helmet and two ballistic vests.
- Deputy Antonio (Anthony) Gonzalez, 25, issued repeated commands to drop the knife before firing once, allowing deputies to pull the child to safety.
- Camacho was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital and pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m.; the child is safe and receiving assistance, officials said.
- The sheriff’s office released bodycam footage; Gonzalez is on paid leave as HCSO Internal Affairs and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigate.
