Body Recovered After Training-Flight Crash in NSW's Budawang National Park

Investigators are gathering information as police secure the remote crash site.

Overview

  • NSW Police recovered a body at about 2pm Friday at the crash site, believed to be a man in his 60s, with formal identification pending.
  • Wreckage was located Thursday after a distress signal prompted a multi‑agency search involving AMSA, the NSW Toll Ambulance helicopter, Police Rescue and PolAir.
  • Flight tracking shows the Cirrus SR20 departed Bankstown just before 11am and disappeared from radar around 2:50pm over the national park.
  • Live records indicate a descent from about 8,250 feet to under 2,000 feet in roughly 25 minutes before the aircraft is believed to have crashed.
  • The aircraft, owned by Bankstown Flying School and on a training exercise with a sole occupant, became accessible only after fog and rugged terrain delayed ground teams, and the ATSB has begun an investigation.
