Body Recovered After NSW Training Flight Crash in Budawang National Park

ATSB investigators have opened an inquiry following weather‑hindered access to the remote crash site.

Overview

  • NSW Police said a body believed to be a man in his 60s was found around 2pm Friday at the wreckage, with formal identification pending.
  • An Emergency Location Transmitter activated about 4.30pm Thursday, and a NSW Ambulance helicopter located the downed aircraft just before 5pm during a multi‑agency search.
  • Fog, steep bushland and rugged terrain prevented immediate access by air or vehicle, and the recovery was completed with assistance from PolAir and Police Rescue.
  • Flight data show the Cirrus SR20 departed Bankstown just before 11am on a training exercise and disappeared from radar about 2.50pm over Budawang National Park after a descent from roughly 8,250ft to below 2,000ft.
  • NSW Police have carriage of the scene and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate the cause of the crash.
