Body of Teen Recruited by Cartel Returned to Family in Chihuahua

The return of his remains highlights cartel recruitment of minors in a contested corridor.

Overview

  • The Fiscalía General de Chihuahua handed over the remains of Josué Guerrero Espino to his mother after four months of searching, with a vigil held in Guachochi and burial planned in Santiago Papasquiaro.
  • His mother said authorities had held the body since June 22 and that he died that day.
  • Guerrero disappeared on April 30 after a false job offer; weeks later he appeared in a video, blindfolded and shaved, stating he had been recruited by the Los Mayos/La Mayiza faction.
  • The body was located in the Aldama–Ojinaga corridor, where Los Cabrera, Los Mayos and La Línea contest territory; two other men were found executed there this week, including Jesús Uriel JT and Israel Sahid VR.
  • A Chihuahua security official said reports of Los Mayos’ presence and alliances indicate criminal vulnerability that should be exploited by intensified operations, while searches continue for other missing youths such as 15-year-old Angel Fernando Loera Díaz.
