Overview

  • Officers recovered 22-year-old Eliotte Heinz’s body in the Mississippi River near Brownsville, Minnesota, at about 10:30 a.m. on July 23, more than a dozen miles downstream from her last known location.
  • Heinz, a mental health counseling graduate student at Viterbo University, disappeared early on July 20 after leaving Broncos Bar in downtown La Crosse and was last seen walking near the river waterfront.
  • Law enforcement deployed dive teams, drones and volunteers to search the riverbanks and adjacent neighborhoods throughout the multi-agency effort.
  • The Heinz family and Viterbo University had publicly urged residents to review home security footage and share information, and friends later located her cellphone during the search.
  • Investigators are reconstructing Heinz’s final movements, following up on community leads and awaiting the medical examiner’s findings.
