Body of Missing Norwegian Trekker Found Near Hayes River in Northern Manitoba

An autopsy in Winnipeg will seek to determine the cause of death following a multi-agency search in hazardous terrain.

Steffen Skjottelvik is seen in an undated Facebook image. He left Fort Severn, Ont., on foot on July 25 with his two dogs and the intention to arrive in York Factory, Man., on Aug. 15, but never made it. His body was discovered on Sunday.

Overview

  • A helicopter pilot assisting the search spotted a body along the west side of the Hayes River near where the hiker’s jacket was found.
  • Gillam RCMP, Parks Canada and Fort Severn community searchers reached the site and confirmed the remains as 29-year-old Steffen Skjottelvik.
  • The body was transported by helicopter to Gillam and then flown to Winnipeg for an autopsy scheduled Monday morning.
  • Earlier in the week, search crews recovered Skjottelvik’s backpack and rifle as efforts concentrated along the river corridors.
  • Skjottelvik set out July 25 from Fort Severn for York Factory and last made contact Aug. 13–14, with one of his dogs later arriving in York Factory without him.
