Body of Missing Chicago Teacher Linda Brown Recovered From Lake Michigan

Authorities plan an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

Overview

  • Chicago police marine units pulled the 53-year-old teacher’s body from the water near the 3100 block of South Lake Shore Drive at 31st Street Harbor late Monday morning, and she was pronounced dead at 12:53 p.m., officials said.
  • The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the body as Linda Brown and scheduled an autopsy for Tuesday; no cause of death has been released.
  • Search efforts focused on the lakefront after surveillance showed Brown arriving by car around 3 a.m. on Jan. 3, walking alone across the 35th Street pedestrian bridge, with her blue 2021 Honda Civic later found near 35th Street and Lake Park Avenue.
  • Chicago Public Schools and Robert Healy Elementary notified families and staff and activated crisis supports, and Mayor Brandon Johnson praised Brown’s impact on students in a statement of condolence.
  • Police said the investigation remains active and asked anyone with information to contact Area One Special Victims Unit, as Brown’s family thanked volunteers and supporters in a public statement.
