Overview

  • Divers, sonar-equipped drones and cadaver dogs located and recovered a body late Wednesday after teams drained portions of the reservoir.
  • The victim was identified as Hipolito “Polo” Hernandez of Bensenville, who disappeared Tuesday evening after entering the prohibited basin.
  • The Wood Dale/Itasca facility was built for Salt Creek stormwater management and features a shallow, unstable silt bottom with powerful drains that pose hidden drowning hazards.
  • More than 30 suburban fire departments joined DuPage County Forest Preserve police and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in the extensive search and recovery mission.
  • Officials have shifted from active recovery to supporting Hernandez’s family while reviewing safety measures at restricted waterways.
