Body of 74-Year-Old Driver Recovered After Big Bug Creek Flood Near Cordes Lakes

Recovery followed a multi-day search that was complicated by hazardous weather.

Overview

  • The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said David Otero was found Thursday along Big Bug Creek near its confluence with the Agua Fria River.
  • Deputies reported the recovery site was about six miles downstream from where he and his car were last seen on November 18.
  • The sedan was previously located lodged against a tree roughly two miles downstream, and search teams found no one in or around it.
  • A deputy had rescued a bystander who entered the water to help the driver as the car began to overturn near E. Fremont Drive and Thunderbird Trail.
  • More than 80 personnel from YCSO Search and Rescue, CAFMA, Mayer Fire and AZDPS used K-9 units, drones and 4x4 teams as weather limited air support, and officials warned residents to avoid flooded washes.
