Overview

  • The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Swiftwater Dive Rescue Team and National Park Service located Jomarie Calasanz’s body in the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River on July 24, less than a mile downstream from where she disappeared on May 25.
  • Officials waited for water flows to subside before deploying sonar equipment, drones, certified swiftwater crews, dive teams and K9 units to pinpoint a high-interest area.
  • The Tulare County Coroner’s Office formally identified Calasanz on July 28, providing official confirmation and closure to her family.
  • Volunteer diver Juan Heredia and other community members launched earlier search attempts but were repeatedly hampered by hazardous conditions and injury.
  • Park authorities warned that rivers remain perilous even at lower flows and urged visitors to wear life jackets and stay away from swift currents.
