Bodoland Council Elections See Over 72% Turnout as Peaceful Polling Concludes

Results will be counted on September 26 following a peaceful, high-turnout vote.

Overview

  • Voting ran from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm across five districts with 3,359 polling stations, where 2.658 million registered voters decided the fate of 316 candidates for 40 seats.
  • The State Election Commission reported turnout above 72% by 4:30 pm, including 77.29% in Kokrajhar and 76.69% in Chirang, with Baksa at 66.87%, Tamulpur at 69.14% and Udalguri at 68.32%.
  • The contest centered on the UPPL, BPF and BJP, with the BJP running without a pre-poll pact even as it partners the UPPL in the outgoing council with the Gana Suraksha Party.
  • Officials reported a largely incident-free day under tight security, including Kokrajhar’s deployment of roughly 4,500 polling personnel to staff 942 stations.
  • Repolling, if required, is scheduled for September 24, and the State Election Commission has slated counting for September 26.
