Bodies of Two Missing Elk Hunters Recovered in Colorado With No Obvious Injuries

The coroner reported no visible signs of trauma as autopsies are prepared to determine how the men died.

Overview

  • Search teams recovered two bodies on Sept. 18 about two miles from the Rio De Los Pinos Trailhead in the Rio Grande National Forest, according to local authorities.
  • Conejos County Coroner Richard Martin said there were no visible injuries or initial signs of foul play, and autopsies are scheduled for Monday in El Paso County.
  • The Conejos County Sheriff’s Office has not formally released the identities pending next-of-kin notification, while the coroner told Denver7 he has identified the men and Saguache County Search & Rescue named them in a post.
  • A multi-day operation using helicopters, drones, K‑9 units, horseback teams and more than 170 personnel searched rugged, high-elevation terrain after the men failed to check in as planned.
  • Deputies found the hunters’ vehicle at the trailhead with camping gear and backpacks inside, heightening concern given reports of heavy rain, fog and fast-moving storms in the area.
