Overview

  • The two-seat Team Rocket F-4 Raider sport plane took off from Binissalem Aerodrome and crashed into the sea near the Soller lighthouse on August 2 after performing aerobatic stunts.
  • A multi-agency response involving the Mallorca Fire Department, Maritime Rescue, Civil Guard GEAS divers, the Navy and Air Force located the wreck 100 metres offshore at a depth of 30 metres.
  • Civil Guard divers recovered the bodies of the former American military combat pilot and his 13-year-old son at around 1pm on August 3, bringing the search to a close.
  • The cause of the crash remains unknown and authorities have launched an official investigation into the circumstances leading up to the accident.
  • Challenging nighttime conditions and Port Soller’s steep coastal terrain underscored the complexity of coordinating marine and air search efforts.
