Overview

  • At approximately 3:40 a.m. on July 11, a bobtail tractor-trailer cab crossed three southbound lanes, breached a concrete barrier near the Delaware anchorage and plunged into the river
  • Dive teams, marine units, helicopters and rescue personnel from DRBA, New Castle County Emergency Management, Delaware State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard are combing the water for the missing vehicle
  • Officials have not located the cab or its driver and remain uncertain how many occupants were inside at the time of the crash
  • The left southbound lane of I-295 remains closed as a precaution, causing significant delays and prompting detour instructions for morning commuters
  • Investigators have opened an official probe into the barrier breach and are reviewing weather and traffic conditions at the time of the incident
