Bobby Whitlock, Co-Founder of Derek & the Dominos, Dies at 77

  • His manager, Carol Kaye, said he died shortly after 1:20 a.m. on August 10 at his Texas home following a brief illness.
  • He first made his mark as the first white artist signed to Stax Records and performed on recordings by Booker T. & the MG’s and Sam & Dave.
  • In 1970, he co-founded Derek & the Dominos and co-wrote seven tracks on its sole album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.
  • His session work included organ and piano parts on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and uncredited contributions to other landmark rock albums.
  • In later life, he completed more than 1,800 paintings and is survived by his wife, Coco Carmel Whitlock, and their three children.
