The Mets agreed to make annual payments of nearly $1.2 million for 25 years starting July 1, 2011, instead of paying Bonilla the remaining $5.9 million on his contract.
Bonilla's payday and deferred money contracts are not uncommon in MLB, with former MVPs and Cy Young winners also receiving annual payments from their previous teams.
The Mets chose to defer payments to Bonilla instead of paying him outright in 2000.
