BMW Will Keep the M3 Name for Its First Electric M3

The move signals BMW plans to sell electric plus gasoline M3s side-by-side to preserve the model’s driving precision.

Overview

  • This week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed BMW M chief Frank van Meel confirmed the battery-electric model will be badged simply “M3” and will be offered alongside a visually similar internal-combustion M3.
  • BMW says the electric M3 will ride on its Neue Klasse architecture and is expected to use a four-motor layout, though the company has not published final power, range, or technical figures.
  • Industry reporting notes the Neue Klasse quad-motor architecture can theoretically support very large outputs but media estimates for the production M3 range widely from roughly 650 horsepower up to more than 1,000 horsepower.
  • BMW is developing a separate gasoline successor on an updated CLAR platform that will keep an inline-six character with mild-hybrid assistance so buyers can choose a traditional driving feel.
  • BMW projects production around 2027 and has indicated the electric M3’s price will be close to the petrol-hybrid M3, though exact pricing and final specifications remain unannounced.
