BMW to Link Leipzig Plant to Germany’s Hydrogen Network by 2027

A dedicated two‑kilometre pipeline will replace truck deliveries to support larger industrial hydrogen use.

Overview

  • BMW signed contracts with Mitnetz Gas to build the roughly two‑kilometre spur and with Ontras for the network connection.
  • The line is planned to supply the Leipzig factory from mid‑2027, replacing hydrogen delivered by trucked cylinders.
  • BMW says the site would be the world’s first auto production facility supplied via a dedicated hydrogen pipeline.
  • Plant manager Petra Peterhänsel said pipeline supply would allow hydrogen use at much larger scale, targeting energy‑intensive steps like paint‑shop dryers.
  • The project ties the plant into Germany’s planned hydrogen core network, which targets about 9,000 km of lines entering service stepwise through 2032.
