BMW to Convert Munich Plant for Exclusive Electric Vehicle Production by 2027

The €650 million ($712 million) investment marks a significant step in BMW's transition to electric vehicles, with the 'Neue Klasse' sedan set to be produced from 2026.

  • BMW is investing €650 million ($712 million) to convert its main plant in Munich to exclusively produce electric vehicles (EVs) from the end of 2027.
  • The overhaul involves four buildings including a new assembly line and body shop, and has moved traditional engine manufacturing to Great Britain and Austria.
  • BMW's 'Neue Klasse' sedan, an electric car roughly the size of the carmaker's current bestselling 3-series model line, will be built at the Munich plant from 2026 in parallel with combustion engine cars.
  • BMW Group reported record sales of over 2.5 million units in 2023 and hit its target of a 15 per cent share of battery-electric vehicles, aiming for over half a million EV sales in 2024.
  • While the company's overall deliveries increased 6.5% last year, EV sales jumped 75%.
