Overview
- BMW is assembling third-generation fuel cells at its Steyr, Austria, and Munich sites ahead of series production.
- Series manufacturing of the fuel-cell system is scheduled to begin at Steyr in 2028, with Landshut to produce the hydrogen-specific BMW Energy Master and other key components from 2026.
- Initial vehicle prototypes will be built at Dingolfing as BMW validates the system and readies industrial processes.
- The jointly developed BMW–Toyota fuel-cell system is about 25% smaller than the iX5 unit yet delivers higher power density for easier packaging across multiple platforms.
- BMW plans a hydrogen-powered X5 for selected markets with suitable refuelling infrastructure, highlighting roughly three-minute refills and prior iX5 prototype range of more than 500 km.
