BMW Recalls U.S. Vehicles Over Fire Risk, Including Toyota Supra

Dealers will install redesigned starters at no cost, with owner letters plus VIN lookups slated for Nov. 17.

Overview

  • Regulatory filings state the engine starter relay can corrode, overheat and short, increasing fire risk, and owners are advised to park outside until repairs are completed.
  • Impacted models span numerous BMW lines — including 230i, 330i, 430i, 530i, Z4, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, 840i, 740Li and 340i — as well as 2020–2022 Toyota Supra variants that use BMW engines.
  • Reported totals vary across coverage, with USA Today citing 145,102 vehicles and Drive reporting 196,355.
  • BMW notified dealers on Sept. 25 and will replace the engine starter with a redesigned unit for free, offer reimbursement for qualifying prior repairs, and launch owner notices and VIN search on Nov. 17 (NHTSA recall 25V644).
  • Vehicles repaired under an August 2024 campaign (24V576) are included in the new action and may need additional service.
