BMW Recalls 486 SUVs Over Faulty Takata Air Bag Inflators
The recall was triggered by a complaint of an air bag inflator explosion that injured a driver, raising concerns about the safety of 30 million Takata inflators under investigation.
- BMW is recalling 486 X3, X4 and X5 SUVs from the 2014 model year in the U.S. due to faulty air bag inflators made by Takata Corp. of Japan.
- The recall was triggered by a complaint in October where an air bag inflator in a 2014 X3 exploded in Chicago, sending a large piece of metal into the driver's lung and causing chest and shoulder injuries.
- About 30 million Takata inflators are currently under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), most of which have not been recalled.
- Takata's air bag inflators have been linked to at least 26 deaths in the U.S. and 30 worldwide since May 2009, in addition to about 400 injuries.
- Owners of the recalled BMW vehicles will be notified by letter starting January 16, 2024, and dealers will replace the air bags at no cost.
