BMW Recalls 196,000 U.S. Vehicles Over Starter Fire Risk, With About 1,500 Toyota Supras Included

Regulators attribute the hazard to water intrusion that corrodes the starter relay.

Overview

  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notices issued Sept. 26 cover multiple 2019–2022 BMW models plus roughly 1,500 MY2020–2022 Toyota Supras built by BMW.
  • Owners are urged to park affected vehicles outside and away from structures because fires could occur while parked or in operation.
  • Dealers will replace the engine starter at no cost, with a phased repair campaign due to parts constraints and interim owner letters scheduled for Nov. 14.
  • VINs will be searchable on NHTSA.gov starting Nov. 14, with a second notice to follow when remedy parts are available.
  • BMW and NHTSA say corrosion of the starter relay can lead to overheating and short circuits; BMW reports no known injuries and estimates at least 331,000 vehicles will be repaired globally, with reimbursement possible for prior related repairs.
