BMW Recalls 196,000 U.S. Vehicles Over Starter Defect That Poses Fire Risk

Owners are urged to park outside pending free starter replacements starting mid-November.

Overview

  • NHTSA says the engine starter relay can corrode and overheat, creating a short circuit that raises the risk of a fire.
  • The U.S. recall covers 2019–2021 330i; 2019–2022 Z4; 2020–2022 530i, X3 and X4; 2021–2022 430i and 430i Convertible; and the 2022 230i, totaling 196,355 vehicles.
  • Toyota separately recalled about 1,500 MY2020–2022 Supra models and will notify owners by late November with free replacement starters.
  • Owners should park vehicles outside and away from structures; dealers will replace the starter at no cost, with VINs searchable and owner letters going out starting Nov. 14 (NHTSA recall 25V636).
  • Documents attribute the defect to water ingress and relay corrosion in Valeo-made starters; no injuries have been reported, and BMW estimates about 0.1% of vehicles carry the fault, following a prior large BMW fire-risk recall in 2024.
