BMW Ploughs Through Sunderland Care Home Wall, Injuring Eight Residents

Two suspects are in custody pending an ongoing police investigation around the damaged care home.

Overview

  • At about 9.20pm on Wednesday, a BMW reported stolen in Fenham was spotted on Sunderland’s A1231 before crashing through Highcliffe Care Home’s exterior wall around 9.40pm during an authorised police pursuit.
  • The collision left a large hole in the wall and caused extensive internal damage with debris and overturned furniture strewn across multiple floors.
  • Northumbria Police, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and North East Ambulance Service evacuated all residents and staff before erecting cordons and metal fencing around the site.
  • Emergency crews treated eight residents for non-life-threatening injuries and conveyed them to hospital before moving them into temporary accommodation arranged by Avery Healthcare.
  • Two 21-year-olds are in custody on suspicion of dangerous driving and motor vehicle theft, and police continue to maintain cordons and carry out inquiries.
